“My hair is a mess,” I say, contemplating what I might do with it for the ball. We’re all cleaned up now, standing in front of a mirror in Abrax’s other bathroom.

Abrax kisses me on the neck. “It’s beautiful, but I’ve already arranged for you and the other women to have your hair and nails done. We have a royal cosmetologist that does such things as these. He’s certainly out of practice, but I’m sure he’ll be happy to get back to his work. But really, I could look at you for all eternity just like this. Everything about you is perfect.”

That’s just it. Abrax accepts me for who I am and seems to cherish me. I would do well to adopt his practice and be so kind to myself.

I know I don’t need a male’s approval to gain my self-worth, but there’s something so nice about being looked at like you’re the only woman for someone. As if you’re their perfect person. That’s how Abrax makes me feel.

He’s not in a rush to be anywhere else or with anyone else. I know we have so much more to learn about each other, but that’s one of the things that makes me happy and excites me. It’s like there’s this long, uncertain future in front of us that could be thrilling and fun.

But then there’s the others, work, home, the unknown. I’d started to think I would never settle down with anyone and have children. It’s only ever been work, work, work.

There are so many attractive possibilities calling me right now as I look into this mirror. Like staying here, being with Abrax, having his baby, and being the queen of a planet.

The computer announces that my dress has arrived. It has been left outside of the door. I have a toga-like gauzy thing wrapped around me. I go to the door, and it rises when I tell it to.

I see Zora across the hall, doing the same thing, reaching down to retrieve her dress. I try to read the expression on her face. She looks a bit different, and I wonder what she and Rah have been up to inside Rah’s room.

Then I think about her secret. Zora's secret shouldn't matter as far as the Rakesh is concerned because she's still going home.

I don't know about me.
